In Sunnyside Gardens, Clarence Stein’s acclaimed urban design project, attached two-story private homes on several city blocks enclose common gardens. The houses originally had open rear porches, almost all of which have been enclosed. PB+A demolished and rebuilt one of the enclosed porches, incorporating a trellis for climbing vines and outriggers from which to hang plants. Its roof is a terrace for the master bedroom. Inside is a sunroom, flooded with light from the south and west. It became our client’s favorite spot in the house. (Photos © Jeff Slotnick)
