In Sunnyside Gardens, Clarence Stein’s acclaimed urban design project, attached two-story private homes on several city blocks enclose common gardens. The houses originally had open rear porches, almost all of which have been enclosed. We demolished and rebuilt one of the enclosed porches, incorporating a trellis for climbing vines and outriggers from which to hang plants. Its roof is a terrace for the master bedroom. Inside is a sunroom, flooded with light from the south and west. It became our client’s favorite spot in the house. (Photos © Jeff Slotnick)
