540 BROADWAY, SOHO CAST IRON HISTORIC DISTRICT

At this striking 1867 Soho building by Jardine and Jardine, we designed a new storefront that reinterprets in wood the cast iron detailing of an 1883 Soho building by noted New York architect Henry Fernbach. We had it painted light gray to complement the building’s marble façade. (Retail tenant Steve Madden later painted it brown and replaced opaque frosted glass transoms with drawings of shoes.) The design earned a Certificate of Appropriateness from the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission. (Photo © Jennifer Krogh)
